Division Five, a structural fabricator located in Hollywood, SC, has been a valued customer of Ocean Machinery since their 2006 installation of the Terminator 1842 Saw and Avenger Drill Line.

The Ocean Liberator CNC Beam Coper was added in 2018 to minimize layout and coping times. A recent visit to their facility reveals W16 x 40’s requiring rat holes, web and flange beveling, taking around 7-minutes and 30 seconds per-end to cope and bevel. Previous manual processing took about one-hour after grinding and final cleanup.

We also observed a “mammoth” W40 x 199 beam being drilled on their Ocean Avenger. The Liberator Beam Coper was used to perform a trim-cut on this “heavy-weight” prior to drilling it.

We thank the team at Division Five for employing the Ocean brand of structural machinery to supplement their fabrication efforts.

A recent visit to Bulldog Ironworks, just south of Dallas, reveals how they leverage Ocean Products to reduce man-hours and improve material flow through their recently expanded facility. They specialize in heavy structural steel fabrication for both commercial and industrial markets.

Material flows in one direction through the shop starting with the Ocean Terminator Saw and their recent addition of the Ocean Liberator Coping Line. Nick Copeland Sr., commented that “we recently completed the stair-stinger cut-outs for a 16 story building, consisting of 96 stringers, in two-days using the Liberator” The Liberator has greatly improved productivity as witnessed in the channel cut-outs being processed for a steel supply house.

Bulldog Iron Works also integrated three pairs of Ocean Flipper Profile Rotators into their fitter-welder lines. Material is rotated at each station, eliminating costly wait times for overhead cranes.

Completed weld prep done on the Avenger PLUS

Ever had to bevel the flanges of a column for weld prep when welding on a base plate?

Sure you have, and it’s a pain to do it manually. But our enterprising friends at A&S Steel in Auckland New Zealand have found a way to do it on their Avenger PLUS Drill Line.

Weld prep bevel of flange being done on the Ocean Avenger PLUS

They place their beams and columns on the table at the desired bevel/chamfer angle, use a standard milling tool and then quickly mill their way through the flange, providing a perfectly beveled part, ready to be welded.

Secured at the proper bevel angle and ready to go!

Well, we do call the Avenger PLUS our Multifunction Machine, and now our customers have shown us yet another operation that can be done with this amazingly versatile machine.

Integration of the Ocean Terminator Saw with the Avenger Drill Line

All Ocean products are designed to be fully-functional stand-alone machines that exhibit amazing productivity and versatility in their own right, and are designed to fit into very compact spaces since most of our customers are pressed for space. However, they are also fully capable of being integrated into fully-functional systems for those customers who have the space to implement them. This can be done at any time in a step-by-step approach as needs require and as funds become available.

We are finding more and more customers using the Avenger (and Avenger PLUS) drill line to not only drill and layout their beams, but also to measure the beam for cutting to length and coping. We often see our machines in a system layout where the Avenger drills, lays out and measures, and the Terminator cuts to length.

Ocean Liberator integrated with Avenger Drill Line

But for those customers who have a significant percentage of their work that also needs to be coped, an Avenger or Avenger PLUS in tandem with the Liberator CNC Coper is even more versatile. These customers use the drill line to place the location reference marks and then use the Liberator to not only cope the beams, but also to cut to length.

Just outside Fresno in Northern California, Steve Bradford of Bradford Steel started off with an Avenger and then subsequently added a Liberator to cope and cut to length. He installed cross transfers to facilitate loading the Avenger and added idler rollers to the drill table, making it easier to feed the beams into the coper. His future plans include additional cross transfers integrated with the outfeed of the Liberator to further speed up production, and the integration of an Ocean Blaster to further reduce costs and improve profitability.

Material handling integrated with Avenger Drill Line

Ocean Machinery provides full CAD layout drawings of an entire system in your location, showing you how the various products can all be integrated in the future. This step-by-step modular approach to machine integration means that you never have to invest too much at one time; just add machines as needed.

These days it is almost impossible to be competitive using a slow manual approach to fabricating, especially when manually measuring & laying out copes, then burning them by hand. Plus there is additional grinding and cleaning of the cope adding additional costs to the process.

This means you have way too many man-hours in each cut or cope. What you really need is a more economical, and more accurate solution that does your coping and notching cleaner and much faster, ensuring you make a larger margin on your bids.

Learn how the Ocean Liberator can make you MONEY by coping your pieces significantly faster and cheaper than doing it by hand or with a robotic plasma coper.

Ocean Machinery, along with its manufacturing partner Peddinghaus and its local dealer Impact Machinery, exhibited the Ocean Liberator CNC Beam Coping machine at the recent Austech trade show in Melbourne Australia.

The Ocean Liberator drew huge crowds at Austech

The simplicity of the Liberator and the ease in which it copes all types of copes made it an instant hit at the show. Its compact size, affordable price explains why it is so popular worldwide and why it is used in both large structural shops as well as all steel fabricators doing a mix of structural and miscellaneous metals.

The Ocean Liberator’s copes require little to no grinding

It is always so gratifying to see the success of our customers. One of our more unusual customers is Industrias Metalicas Caribe, SRL, known as Indumeca, who is based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Indumeca started out life as a manufacturer of propane and natural-gas cylinders, but in a very short time has become one of the top structural steel fabricators in the Caribbean Islands.

Tonnage has increased 10x in less than 2 years

After the acquisition of multiple Ocean products, including two Avenger 40 drill lines, a Clipper angle line, a Liberator beam coper and a Terminator band saw, Indumeca has seen their fabricated output tonnage increase by more than ten time in less than two years.

With the Ocean equipment, they still have the capacity to double their current tonnage, and are aiming to become the top structural steel fabricator in the Caribbean islands.

2 Ocean Avengers, a Liberator & a Terminator keeps this shop producing

Ing. Enrique Ureña, founder and owner of Indumeca, explains how the purchase of the two Ocean Avengers allowed them to allocate all their plates and other profiles on one Avenger, and all their beams and columns to the other Avenger. Moreover the machines have never let him down. The trend in the Caribbean islands is to move away from anything other than drilled holes. >>Watch Video Below

It’s always gratifying to see the progress and development path that our customers are on, once they have embraced the benefits of CNC Steel Fabrication. Approximately 5 years ago Ian Head of Steel Builders in Sydney Australia embraced our Ocean Avenger CNC Drill Line. The immediate improvement to the bottom line and cash flow improvement that this machine made for them started Steel Builders down a path of incremental steps, and it wasn’t long before they had installed the Ocean Liberator CNC Beam Coping Machine, as well as a Peddinghaus CNC Saw Drill Line and CNC Angle Line.

The Avenger CNC Drill Line was the first step in the evolution that led to the rapid growth of Steel Builder in Sydney Australia. The Avenger is the most popular CNC Drill Line with more than 700 installations in over 60 countries around the world.

Just look at the super clean copes that the highly affordable Ocean Liberator CNC Oxy-Fuel Beam Coping Machine is capable of in the hands of a competent operator. Why would you ever cope any other way?

Steel Builders also modified their Liberator with simple mirrors attached to the torch head so that they can easily observe the cut on the far side of the flange, and added a remote monitor to the machine column to make it easier to observe the machine speed and travel while watching the cut. So simple yet so effective. This is what we love to see, customers getting the most out of their machines.
