Baxter Engineering in Canberra, Australia has most of their fabricating bases covered with two separate divisions; a Structural Fab shop for all things structural and a Mechanical Fab shop that makes truck bodies, excavator buckets, and does mechanical repairs and more.

Second generation owners, Matt and Nathan Hart, saw the Ocean Blaster for the first time at the Fabtech Show in Chicago a few years ago and fell in love. They knew that once they had finished building their new facility, an Ocean Blaster would immediately find a home in their shop.

Fast forward to present day: Matt and Nathan have completed construction on their new facility, the Ocean Blaster has been installed, and it is already exceeding their expectations.

As you can see from the images, their shop is super clean, and Matt attributes a lot of that to the Ocean Blaster cleaning the steel before any of his guys even touch it. 

The team at Baxter fabricated their own cross-feed supports on both the in and out-feed sides of the Blaster. These supports create a good buffer zone on either end to reduce crane time. They also installed a jib crane on either end so they don’t tie up the overhead.

Steel may be strong but it has downsides as well, steel oxidizes very quickly when exposed to the elements, and if left out in your yard long enough it can grow some serious rust. It doesn’t matter if that steel is headed for a drill line, angle line, band saw or plasma machine that rust and scale is gonna be an issue.

CNC machines rely on laser sensors to set the zero reference for profiles to be run.  Rust and scale buildup can cause the laser to miscalculate the starting position and/or distance of the profile. This costly miscalculation can result in holes, slots, and cuts being off enough to render the profile unusable.

With this in mind, MBM Fabricators in Romulus, Michigan sought out a pre-processing solution that would work with their current flow of band saw cutting profiles to length followed by a single spindle drill line. They also had to take into consideration the overhead cranes that run the length of their shop which would eliminate anything of considerable size taking up space in the shop.

Because of the Ocean Blaster’s compact footprint, MBM Fabricators was able to utilize the “dead space” against the wall of the shop, underneath the overhead crane. They are now running all their material through the Ocean Blaster before processing & painting, and recently commented “The Ocean Shot Blaster has exceeded our expectations”.

A recent visit to a formidable structural and miscellaneous steel fabricator, K&J Steel, located in Washington, Utah, reveals that their Ocean BLASTER Shot Blast System, installed eight months ago, has had an immediate payback in several key areas of their business.

Owner Jared Bolander mentioned that prior to installing the Ocean Shot Blast System, they had seven men in the paint department with five manually cleaning steel. Now this department runs more efficiently with two men and the BLASTER cleaning the steel. The machine was a “no-brainer for our operation and the price was reasonable”.

Other benefits realized from its implementation include easier part and layout marking on “clean steel”, better adherence to paint specifications, faster turn-around of finished part profiles, and the shop associates’ satisfaction associated with pre-blasted steel. “Nobody wants to be manually cleaning steel outside during summer months here” Jared noted.
