These Cobalt drills are the newest drill bits we offer, and are made specifically for CNC Beam Drill Lines.
We tested this COBALT Structural Steel drill bit in early August 2006 and drilled 490 holes in 1 hour.
We also drilled more than 500 holes and the drill was still drilling holes at less than 8 seconds per hole.

Insert Drill Bit (Spade Drill Bit) Advantages | Insert Drill Bit (Spade Drill Bit)Disadvantages | Twist Drill Bit Advantages | Twist Drill Bit Disadvantages |
Savings ? You avoid having to spend $10,000 on a drill grinder. Convenience – They always have a perfectly ground structural point. Simplicity – They can just be discarded when dull and they are cheap to replace – around $30 every 800 – 1000 holes. Convenience – Nobody has to learn the art of sharpening drill bits. |
Cost – Insert Drill require holders for each drill size and you require at least two holders of each size.
Cost – Insert bits definitely leave a burr on the exit of the hole, especially on lighter profiles and the fabricator must spend money on labor and consumables to grind the exit of the hole. Cost – If an insert breaks, the tool holder will be damaged and will have to be replaced – replacing tool holders is expensive. Cost – If the Torx head holding the insert is stripped you have to replace the tool holder – replacing tool holders is expensive. |
Savings ? You do not need to grind the exit of the hole ? save on non value added activity. Savings ? Twist drill bits cost less than 1/10th the cost of insert drill bits ? see worked costing example below. Convenience – It only takes a couple of hours to train an operator to be able to sharpen drill bits. Savings and Convenience – you can purchase twist drill bits from any vendor ? you are not locked into a particular supplier. Savings ? No matter how badly you dull a drill point it can always be resharpened ? in some cases you can also resharpen a broken drill bit. |
Inconvenience – You need to train an operator how to sharpen drills. Cost ? you have to purchase a $10,000 drill grinder. |

The Ocean Penetrator drill bits feature oil coolant holes that run through the drill bit to cool the center of the drill while it is drilling through all structural steel profiles including beams, channel, angle, plates, tube, etc.
This results in exceptional tool life. Our customers average anywhere from 300 to 500 holes per sharpening, and are able to get more than 100 sharpenings per drill bit. This yields in excess of 30,000 holes per drill bit resulting in significant savings and improved overall fabricating profitability.
The Ocean Penetrator drill bit is now also available in a Cobalt coating2. This further improves the drilling speed, increases the number of holes that can be drilled before resharpening, and increases your overall profitability.
We are also now able to supply the Ocean Penetrator drill bits with a factory sharpened 170 degree drill point3 as opposed to the standard 135 degree drill point. To obtain the best performance the drill must be sharpened to a 170 degree drill point geometry. This is ideal for structural steel and results in burr free holes that further reduces costs by eliminating the costly grinding of the exit hole.
The resharpening of the drill bits is a simple one-step process on the Rush 250 A drill grinder available from Ocean Machinery. The operator is able to easily resharpen drill bits in less than 2 minutes and this is normally done while the CNC drill line is running, meaning that the drill resharpening is done during operator idle time.
You can view the simple drill bit resharpening process on our Drill Sharpening Tutorial Video below:
This further translates into further efficiency as the drill chips and swarf compress to occupy much less space in your scrap bin than the stringy chips which fill the bin with air
* Faster Drilling feed rates – The Ocean Penetrator works best at 7.1 in/min of feed rate – almost 20% faster than regular twist drill bits. This results in faster drilling times. Click here for recommended feed & speed rates .*
1 Actual tool life will vary based on a variety of factors including drill diameter, thickness and hardness of material being drilled, drill RPM, drill feed rate, drill sharpening quality, and other factors.
2 Cobalt coating not available on all drill diameters
3 170 degree factory drill point not available on all drill diameters
